what is ironic the members don't put it into the actual work when elected and at the time i think it was true and i was disillusioned at that point and i asked him to prove me wrong and he did. he was diligent and wrote comments in the margin and questions large and small they provoked. he met with people and met with teams how to improve things. he connected with other community college board members to see how they ran. he seeked out advice and only the board member who gave out email and phone number to the public and he got calls from students and others waiting to advocate for them. this is reminding he and when swearing in would lift up the boys so they could be near him. don't touch that. i think -- i was going to say what john said. when he was really ill he still went to the meetings. he went to one after having pneumonia and then came home. even toward the end of his life he went to meetings and pushed for accountability and change. he wasn't as shocked as i was by the campaign but was shocked -- >> [inaudible] >> you know what sweetie? there are a bunch of toys over there.

you were there all the time, working on elections, and after my dad ran you helped my brother run. the same people helping us, being part of the family, working together for the city. i remember some of the crazy things we did growing up in political life. going to i think it's call -- i don't know if it's called the muni lot or parking lot and where the buss are in the morning so we could put a handout on every seat and bus that was there. i remember standing out in front of markets and it was raining and horrible and saying "will you vote for my dad" and milton loved this. he loved this energy and out of most of us and showed in what he ended up doing. all three kids learned at an early age giving to other people was one of the main things we were put on this world to do. our mom and dad taught us that. milton was a true believer sometimes to his detriment and would take on any power he needed to be even if it meant being fired from the board and "you're not doing enough. you're not raising enough money". he would take on anyone anytime if it was the right thing to do. he felt so

i would like to recognize the department heads and elected officials. i know i've seen some of you here. thank you for coming out to support the fund workover our city employees. it is a privilege to me in particular to be here because i have had the opportunity for the last several years to be on the selection committee for the good government awards. it is really a treat. as a human-resources director, i get a lot of bad news. some of that gets in the newspaper. with all due respect to our brethren in the press, it's always a good story to write about bad behavior that may happen in a city department or that a public employee may have engaged in. we are the largest employer in san francisco. it is only natural as some of that bad behavior may fall on our doorsteps. it is refreshing to see some of the wonderful work people are doing, who really personify the ethos of san francisco. i want to celebrate that. on behalf of the mayor, thank you. please do your part to extend your appreciation to those people. it was a very difficult process. the community

with election and new congress coming together. as i read libya's recent history it is a bit like we are reliving the post world war ii years. how right he was. that was chris. always thinking, always sharp, always ready. public service is too often looked down upon by some in this country. often my colleagues in the foreign service la meant they don't make them the way they used to anymore. today we remember a man, chris stevens, whose life and service just proves how wrong my colleagues really are. chris shows us they still make them the way they used to, only an awful lot better, thank you. it was our personal belief that if you could fight or die for the country or vote in an election, you should be able to go to a party. [applause] the folks that we were working with at the police department were hesitant about that. to address their concerns we agreed to very stringent beer gardens, which we did not feel like needed, but we did it in order to produce the event. later, we found out it would not be an 18 and older event. it essentially became a non- negotiable item. if we wanted them to sign off on the permit, with a bar, which was a major revenue stream, we had to be 21 and over. being a promoter and organizer with a long history of doing these events without problems, with a curved track record, that seemed like a perfect result. the police requirement at the event looked like two cops, with no problems with nothing to do, there were five officers at the event now, which we had to pay overtime fees for. trying to discuss this with the officers, public safety is brought up and it is very important to me and to us. i mentioned that i had another life as a part-time psyc

first, if any of you have ever wondered what an ls -- and elected officials sounds like with anesthesia and his mouth, i want to let you know that i got out of a dental chair 20 minutes ago after a few hours of dentists work. but i wanted to give a few remarks of how i think we are doing. i'm very much more are optimistic about how we're doing than four years ago. i read an article from the chronicle and it said that the candidates disagreed on everything, except for the need to crack down on entertainment violence. i did not propose anything for the first six months until there were half a dozen people affected. that was followed by a terrific shooting, which was then followed by an incident in union square. i want to take a moment and thank the san francisco police department for your input. if we pass legislation to require additional security requirements and plans. we pass legislation to give the entertainment commission more tools to shut down those handful of clubs that have often given a bad name to the rest of the industry. we passed legislation to pass for the first time a par

and when i was elected to office four years ago, i was unfortunately more surprised than i wanted to be about how far behind san francisco government was. this was very 2008, 2009. with you i'm really proud of the leaps and bounds we have taken as a city * . i was proud in 2010 to help move forward legislation to really bring together city departments to work in a coordinated way with our committee on information technology. to help create a chief information officer position for the city. i was also proud to work with then mayor newsome in passing the first generation of open data legislation that we have. but as our civil grand jury in june pointed out, our i-t in san francisco is still in need of a culture shock. and this is where all of us come in today. we have 200 data sets that have already been put out there, but by and large the data sets put out by city government are data sets that i think show us in a very positive way. from my perspective, it's important for us to keep on pushing data sets that allow us to deal with the sometimes imperfections in city government. to figu
